Each morning, producers gather a number of interesting tidbits of news from social media, pop culture and other areas, pitch them to Nightly News anchor Brian Williams for possible use in the newscast's 3rd broadcast segment. Let viewers watch the daily web-only video clip, review the ideas and then vote for, or comment on the ones they think are most important or interesting.
Expand Making a Difference franchise to encourage community involvement and problem solving. Viewers might be asked to submit nominations for do-gooders who deserve attention or support; activists/samaritans could submit proposals for initiatives that can "make a difference" and viewers would vote/comment on their favorites. Not sure if this is on the schedule anymore, but if it is, this could be a way to engage users in suggesting where Matt should go, beyond the methods we've used previously (e-mail, mapped comments, etc.)
Ask users and travel writers to submit suggestions on the best places to go for family vacations (or adventure travel, or romantic weekends, on a budget, etc.). Entice users to vote and comment on their preferences. Perhaps pair this with some kind of contest or sweepstakes in which the winner would get a trip to the top location.
